As night fell, a general of the Chinese army is said to have requisitioned a warehouse belonging to a tea producer to lodge his soldiers there. But the place was entirely given over to drying still-damp tea leaves; in a panic, the planter is then said to have had the idea of lighting a spruce-wood fire to speed up the drying.
