Legend tells of a 15th century samurai in Japan enjoying his tea when his servant, Genmai, accidentally spilled rice into the cup. Enraged, the samurai executed Genmai, but upon tasting this fortuitous combination of tea and rice, he became enchanted. To honour his servant's memory, he bestowed upon the tea the name "Genmaicha".
